Social Skills Group

What are social skills?

According to Wikipedia (Click here for link to source), "A social skill is any skill facilitating interaction and communication with others. Social rules and relations are created, communicated, and changed in verbal and nonverbal ways. The process of learning such skills is called socialization."

So basically, as we've grown and developed, and been in different social situations, we have worked out how to behave, respond and exchange communication in a socially acceptable way. This development has occurred thanks to our understanding. This is from our understanding of verbal communication, of our understanding and perception of how others respond/react to a situation, how we would feel when in the same situation, our understanding of nonverbal communication like facial expressions and body language etc

So while we know how to make friends, know how close to stand to someone without making them uncomfortable, how to interact with others in all types of situations like social and professional situations, we often take these skills for granted because they come naturally to us. But for some kids, the opposite is true! This is particularly true for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Who will benefit from the group?

Konfident Kids Social Skills Groups are aimed at children with an ASD who are often known to prefer independent play and seem disinterested in making friends. It isn't true that they don't want to make friends, usually more accurate to say they don't understand how to make friends. They don't understand others' body language or how to respond to a situation. They often feel like they may as well be speaking another language for all the progress they make.
